Ph.D. student receives one of Ecuador's highest distinction awards.
Congratulations to Ph.D. student Myriam Belen Sotomayor Burneo, who has been awarded the Dr. Matilde Hidalgo de Prócel Medal recognizing her work and contributions to the scientific community. This is one of the highest distinctions awarded by Ecuador’s legislative branch, the National Assembly (National Congress).
The medal celebrates the legacy of Dr. Matilde Hidalgo, a pioneering doctor, poet and women’s rights activist who became the first woman in Ecuador to graduate from high school, pursue a university education, and vote not just in Ecuador but in all of Latin America.
Of receiving the award, Burneo says, "receiving this award inspires me to continue my journey as a scientist while also reminding me of the responsibility to motivate and empower others. I hope to inspire my community and demonstrate that anything is possible with perseverance, hard work, and teamwork."
