Matt DeLisa wins Charles Thom Award

Congratulations to Professor Matt DeLisa, recipient of the 2024 Charles Thom Award from the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (SIMB).

The Charles Thom Award is given to individuals who have made outstanding research contributions in industrial microbiology and/or biotechnology. The award is named for Charles Thom, a pioneer in industrial microbiology and mycology, and "recognize[s] individuals who have made one or more outstanding research contributions in industrial microbiology and/or biotechnology…of exceptional merit, reflecting an independence of thought and originality that adds appreciably to scientific knowledge."

DeLisa will receive the award and deliver the Charles Thom Award Lecture at the society's annual meeting in Boston this August.

Dr. DeLisa is the William L. Lewis Professor of Engineering at Cornell and Director of the Cornell Institute of Biotechnology. A member of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering faculty since 2003, DeLisa’s groundbreaking research focuses on understanding and controlling the molecular mechanisms underlying protein biogenesis - folding and assembly, membrane translocation and post-translational modifications - in the complex environment of a living cell. His Ph.D. is from the University of Maryland and his B.S. is from the University of Connecticut.
