Michael Filler ‘00

Michael Filler (B.S. ChE ‘00) is an Assistant Professor in the School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. While pursuing his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at Cornell, Filler participated in a co-op program at Intel, worked in Jim Engstrom's group for a year, and as a senior, served as a teaching assistant in Mass and Energy Balances. He was also a member of Kappa Delta Rho fraternity.

After graduating from Cornell, Filler went on to receive his Ph.D. from Stanford University and then worked at the California Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral researcher. He also worked for IBM and Symyx Technologies short periods of time before joining the faculty at Georgia Tech.

His research group studies semiconductor nanowire chemistry and physics with the aim of devising rules for rationally engineering new materials for a range of next generation electronic and optoelectronic devices. He teaches Kinetics and Reactor Design (undergraduate and graduate) and is excited about a new undergraduate level course in Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy he is developing for chemical engineers. He recently received the CETL/BP Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. Of his time at Cornell Filler said, “I have never felt unprepared for any topic I've pursued since graduating from Cornell chemical engineering.”
