The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation has announced that Robert Langer, Institute Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has won the 2019 Dreyfus Prize in the Chemical Sciences. The biennial Prize, which includes a $250,000award, is conferred this year in Chemistry in Support of Human Health. The award ceremony will be held at MIT on September 26 and will include a lecture by Langer. Langer is a CBE alumnus, earning a B.S. in chemical engineering in 1970. Read more
Samuel Crozier “Sam” Fleming ’62, a Cornell trustee emeritus, life overseer of Weill Cornell Medicine and a presidential councillor, died May 2 at the age of 78. Fleming was a popular and devoted alumni leader in the Boston area and a longtime supporter of the university across a broad range of departments and programs; he most recently enabled the creation of the Samuel C. Fleming Molecular Engineering Laboratories in Olin Hall and, in 2015 with his wife, Nancy, funded new graduate fellowships in chemical and biomolecular engineering. Read more
As published in the Cornell Chronicle, "Prof. Abe Stroock has spent much of his career studying microfluidics, wet chemical processes on small scales. About a decade ago, he became intrigued by plant microvasculature, the webs of capillaries that move liquid around inside tissue. Plants have two systems: the xylem, which brings water up to the leaves, and the phloem, which carries photosynthetic products down from the leaves to the rest of the plant’s tissues. The competition car was powered by a zinc alkaline battery and stopped by an iodine clock reaction. The 2019 competition took place at University of Massachusetts Amherst, and the distance needed to reach as closely as possible was 15.5 meters. Cornell's ChemE car stopped .95 meters short of the line and finished in third place, qualifying the team for Nationals. The National competition will take place in Orlando, FL at the AIChE Student Conference in November.
